Brilliant anthology of life stories in a Pennine village in the 1800's. Excellent read! Review by Landgirl
A rich source of the facts of life in Thornton during the period 1751-1938.
Social, political and domestic histories as experienced by the inhabitants of this
small township are all documented from newspapers of the time.
Joy and jollification. Temperance and inebriation. Crime and punishment, it's all
here. Photographs, maps and illustrations all help to bring this book to life!
It is an excellent reference book and an enjoyable read either by dipping in, or from
cover to cover.

A refreshing book with a difference Review by Michael
The pages of the book overflow with examples of human drama: accidents and sudden death, bankruptcy, the buying and selling of property, transport development, crime and punishment, bitter religious disputes, the development of local societies, sports and entertainments, temperance and drunkenness, gambling, education and health and births marriages and deaths. A really good read. It's the sort of book you never get tired of - it can be read and re-read at leisure. (Posted on 13/10/2009)
